Google Algorithm Updates - 2020 Ongoing Discussion

Does anyone else regularly see referrals from this domain? I have seen it several times just while looking at real-time referrals in GA.
Big site for my day-job, yes, we see this frequently.

You can set up a custom alert in Google Analytics to notify you of when these referrals (I still don't know how the correct spelling, thanks HTML) occur. I think the question has been discussed on here before, at some point, the manual team review your site and assign you a score, so how much of the last mile for authority sites, particularly in YMYL niches, is based on this manual process?

Thanks both

Appen back on my site again today... I do have some key pages that I hardcode(with dynamic updates) as much schema as a I can (legit, not spammy), so maybe they are interested in that. I rolled out some new rating stuff last week.

Update: July 23rd, 2020

Looking like there was an update yesterday, probably still going on today. All of my projects saw about a 10% boost in traffic.

Seems to be reflected in the SERP volatility trackers. I haven't and don't plan on digging into the details of what changed this time. I'm just going to appreciate the 10% boosts and keep grinding.

Seeing improvements on sites:

  1. I havent touched in months
  2. That have slow wordpress themes
  3. Are decent/mid major B2B terms
  4. Have hardly any content, less than 1k words total on the sites
  5. Little use of the keyword Im ranking for ( only on the homepage of the sites, used very little )
  6. Little to no backlinks to the sites

Went from 5th to 3rd on my best one. Most of this is documented in my Ranking A New Site series:
  1. Ranking A New Site From Scratch - Day 0
  2. Ranking A New Site From Scratch - Days 1-31
  3. Ranking A New Site From Scratch - Days 31-60
  4. Ranking A New Site From Scratch - Days 61-90
  5. Ranking A New Site From Scratch - Days 91-120
  6. Ranking A New Site From Scratch - Days 121-150

Update: July 30th, 2020

Whatever they did on the 23rd they seem to have largely reversed, or at least that was the effect on my side.

Update: August 10th, 2020

Word on the street is a BIG BOY update is rolling out right now. I can see it in my analytics for the day. Probably started around a couple hours ago, still on-going. Some of my sites are down a bit, some are up a good bit. Hold on to your pants.

Yeah, definitely seeing the massive fluctuations across multiple of my sites. Some pages have gone up, some have gone down. And usually by a large margin either way.

Seeing good increases across my sites, seems to be over 20%+ on my largest

Also, I saw pretty big decreases over the weekend, now up as above.

Results in my niche seem pretty messed up with some small authority thin sites at the top, normally it's big dogs only.

This is pretty crazy.

My weekend dropped off a cliff, and around 5 - 7 p.m. EST yesterday was nearly double traffic. Big swings.

EDIT: Looks like it may be nothing.

John Mu: "I don't have all the details yet, but it seems like this was a glitch on our side and has been fixed in the meantime. If someone could fix the other 2020-issues, that would be great."

So we all back to normal?
I'm still tanked, no recovery at all.

This one gave me flashbacks of Penguin in 2012. I'll never forget it. I was eating breakfast at this really nice villa I rented in St Lucia and almost fell off my chair. Started looking through my client's rankings, all of which were red. Ruined the rest of my vacation. Thank baby Jesus this was reverted back.

At first I was rolling my eyes cause I thought everyone was just crying like little bitches cause of an another update, but:

For a single keyword to have over 50% volatility - that literally SHOULD mean there is something wrong with parsing of Google data and the problem has to be on our end, that just doesn't happen. 94% volatility means over 9 URLs in the top 10 dropped out of the top 10 and the last 2 moved down 4 positions. WTF.

@CCarter What does your graph look like for the last 2 months?

I feel its been more quiet than usual, mabye something to do with the hearings?

Volatility for the last 180 days for this term:

94% volatility, then an immediate 94% volatility the next day means an immediate reversal of the previous day's rankings.

Honestly seeing anything above 30% would be amazing, it happens but not what we saw.

I feel its been more quiet than usual, mabye something to do with the hearings?

I doubt Google really cares about the hearings at the end of the day. Google will keep taking space within its search results with it's own properties. It's their website at the end of the day - if you want Google traffic play by their rules.

Is the bug back? I see weird things happening, jumps up to all time high for some, but a bunch of pages dropping out according to Ranktracker.

This looks like a regular update, the drop is not as severe as the one from several days ago:

cEujpHf.png

The movement in the top 10 today is about 24% on average across all keywords, so it's an Update, but not a bug like we saw 5 days ago. Graphically you can see the difference in the SERPs.

It is very high though, higher than normal since it is uniform across all keywords.

I guesstimate I'm 20%-30% down on this update right now, will see how it shakes out

One of my decent volume keywords went from #1 to #192 today. All other variations of that keyword also went for a toss. My overall traffic is still growing though and I don't see any manual action. All other topics are fine.

I don't get how that is even possible. I mean, feel free to drop me to #2 or #5 if you feel my content is crappy but how do I go from being #1 for weeks to #192 all of a sudden?? Google you crazy #^%@

"bug" or test to see what would really happen if links weren't such important ranking signals?
After a lot of research I hate to admit I'm starting to believe this theory. They really were testing removing backlinks from the equation.
