Just Sold My Portfolio for 7 Figures USD, AMA.

Just reading this thread now. Good stuff.

Didn't see anything about capital gains earned as result of the sale. What profit % did you pocket?

Does that % change if you apply an operators salary to your wage expenses?

Also, good on you for starting over from scratch. It looks like you're about 1/2 through your 24-month goal at this point. What's the current MRR / ARR looking like for the new portfolio?

3. I look at my top 3 competitors and reach out to them and offer to buy their website or compete with them directly. Most don't reply or just reply saying no. I then use SEMRush to download all the pages of the website and replicate each only making it better and adding value.
When selecting competitors to target, are you going after smaller / lower authority sites or larger high DR ones? In other words, is it better to go after a site that’s easier to beat but has less to “take” versus going after the big guys.

Sometimes - tbh I just want as big a spreadsheet of content topics as possible. Whilst I may not rank for every thing I target chances are I will pick up enough longtails to make it worthwhile.

% calculations over a 7 year period and factoring in salary equations is a paper chase.

Money in, money out keeps it simple.

Current portfolio is storming. Slightly ahead of target in terms of monthly revenue needed to list for sale. 16 months should be achievable.

I mean... that keeps it simple from an accounting / bookkeeping perspective. But, I'd want to know if I actually made a profit, or if the lump sum I made was simply because I traded away my time for free.

Depending on the profit level, opportunity cost comes into play - in a major way. But, if all you wanted was a lump sum, I guess that doesn't matter.

Good to hear the new sites are working out. Hopefully you're seeing a profit there.

Well to answer your question directly my business (which is purely the numbers for the sites) runs at 90% operating profit so yes I believe it has been very profitable no matter what way you cut the cake

Just wanted to say thank you for this post.
I'm very new to this and approach from more of a tools/stats website perspective (not much of a writer) but its very cool to see your exit and the upside of the industry.

A year later, have you had success in rebuilding back up? Guessing your plan is to just exit for 7 figures every few years and slowly become really rich?

Thank you. Glad you found it useful.

I am already closing in on my next exit - now expected to list around 12-13 months from now. It will be bigger than this one and will have been achieved in less than a quarter of the time.

So to answer your question the goal is to grow rich quickly not slowly by reinvesting profits from this exit to the next instead of buying a Lambo and wasting the obvious advantage buying an existing site brings.

I started a new thread about it - search the forum for it if you are interested.

Good luck!

I think what stackcash meant is: how much total money did you invest in, how much did you get out, if you divide those two numbers you'll have a % return on investment, which you divide by the years you spent building it you'll have an annual IRR and it gives you an idea of whether you'd have been better off just investing cash in the stock market.

Yes I understand that. Let’s just say if you can’t beat the S&P500 annualised returns you are doing this game very wrong LOL

Thanks for all the great information, I've used this entire thread as a reference and have taken massive action! Thank you for this, it's amazing that you so freely shared all of this and it's extremely valuable.

1 question I have if you're able to answer, did you file a trademark on your brand and include this in the sale? Reason why I ask is that I have an ecommerce shop that I tried to get a trademark on the brand and my attorney just let me know the USPTO denied it and the attorney is advising I rename/rebrand as down the road I may get a cease and desist and I would have to 'cease and desist' as I wouldn't be able to defend my position. He may be a bit overzealous so I'm just seeking out other opinions, obviously not specific to my case, just in general regarding content websites/trademarks?

I'm just wondering with these content websites if it's best practice especially on Odys domains or other domains you purchase where there may have been a previous 'brand' associated with it?

Whatever feedback you have is greatly appreciated, thanks so much!

Thanks, glad you find this info useful.

Trademarking is not something I ever looked into.
