Hello All,
One or two of you know me, I work as a freelance digital marketing consultant and have been working in various online roles for nearly 18 years now.

I have been on the freelance thing for just over a year now and I am enjoying it, however the one thing that I have always felt was that it would be nice to have a web business that I could run that would pay the bills and once set-up, would not require huge amounts of my time each month. Ideally, it would generate between $800-1000 per month profit.

All these years of experience have never been put into my own thing, I have more or less always worked agency-side or in-house and most of this has been at enterprise level. So I have no real experience with Affiliate stuff or other monetization strategies other than Adsense. I am pretty strong on SEO, Adwords and Social Media and I have good contacts for content generation. I also know how to build a website and I am happy in Wordpress.

I guess I would like some input as to what would be the best kind of site for me to build to get to that kind of revenue quickly. I can also throw a bit of cash at it from the start if I have a good feeling about it.

Should I be looking at Affiliate, Adsense, LeadGen, Subscription or Publishing or some other model?

Any input to help me decide an initial roadmap would be greatly welcomed, this would also be my first case study here on BUSO.

Thanks in advance.

IF you have a good feeling about it? It sounds like you are looking for a guarantee that you'll hit a home-run when you are up to bat the first time. In the history of the world No ONE has ever done that, not even the greats. Zuckerberg failed his first project. Gates failed his first project. Even Buffet makes mistakes. Elon Musk just failed and blew up Zuckerberg's satellite and now Zuckerberg is crying about it. Risks, mistakes, and errors are required to make course corrections. They are a required ingredient in a road to success.

You're first dozens of projects might fail - and if you are not willing to fail then you'll never see the success that comes after the failures.

You need to change the way you approach projects and take more risks and be willing to lose money over and over and over again, and be comfortable with it until you succeed. There is no skipping that "risk" step, you just can't skip it mate.

I wouldn't bother with Subscription models on the first go. That most definitely won't be hands off.

Remember too, it's never this OR that. It can always be this, that, or this AND that at the same time. But if you want to keep things simple and hyper-focused it might feel more contained to choose one.

You can go the distance with any of those monetization models. I've got a real love for Adsense. It can totally blow or it can rock, all depending on your keyword research. You want people in the information seeking phase and tell them all about what they need to know while letting the ads be the final answer. An example would be "yeah you need this degree that involves these classes blah blah" well what do you know, there's ads for colleges showing up. The main thing here is having cash and time for content and being able to rank. That's where the hot organic traffic is at that gives you the solid 3-5% CTR's.

The affiliate path would be another decent "first" option. Best blank and blank Reviews type of keywords. Rank them, leak them, get hot traffic to them, and make money. It's about as simple as it gets. Build more content around them so you don't look like a greedy affiliate site.

In the end, you can't choose a bad monetization method. You can couple the wrong niche with the wrong method. You can screw up keyword research along the way. Carter wrote the holy grail on monetization methods.

The foundation is critical to success. Decide the vertical you want to work in first. Health, Wealth, Happiness, Fitness, Finance, Tech, Real Estate, etc. The list goes on. You know massive cash flows through each of those. Then you can brand and build the site based on the vertical and an angle, but start with a narrow niche focus within it. This way you don't back yourself into a corner and can expand. It does magic for the visitors to disarm their paranoia that you're just an affiliate site, and it leaves room for you or a buyer to expand if you choose to liquidate. I wrote about thinking through this process.

I'm happy to see you making the leap after such a long time. You're equipped with everything you need to win, including the BuSo support system. You've obviously got the skill to do 10x or 100x 1k per month. You've got to shed the desire for stability and predictability, the fear of risk and loss, and the need to shift responsibility off of your own shoulders. If at any point you leave an opening where a failure can be blamed on anyone but yourself, you've made yourself a victim. Take all of the heavy responsibility on your back and get climbing!

Can't wait for the case study!

No one can answer that.

Building a business = Failing often.

But that doesn't mean you give up and keep hopping around to the next hot thing.

You need to define your goals.

What route is going to reach those? Are you even passionate about that route? Can you work on that 365 days a year, for 12-20 hours a day? If the answer is no, then success in those areas isn't for you.

CC brought up a good point with the "IF". Either you're all in or you're all out!

Playing the game in the middle = Feeling better about losing mindset. That train of thought will fuck you at every turn. The moment the tides get tough, you'll be too weak to keep going.

Forget about making money quickly!

What's going to happen in the long run?

You make $5K-$10K, whatever, and the what? You're still a fucking peasant!

You think you can just start relaxing while "passive" income rolls in every month?

LOL! Your competitors will eat you ALIVE.

If you can't commit to working for the rest of your life, every waking second, just quit now.

Go flip burgers at McDonalds for spare cash and be a lazy cunt.

In the grand scheme of things $5K, $10K, etc is a fart in the wind.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the replies!! :-)

I have no problem with building and then having to rebuild again due to failure, infact my first entry into the world of business was back in 1999 or 2000 when I launched a very early eCommerce business that grew for some years into quite a business from my parents spare room! Sadly I lost the damn thing when I had a real bad accident.

If I knew back then, what I know now I would probably be one of those guys you hate with a superyacht. Sadly, I decided to take a path of stability and reliance on others for a long time. I'm over that for good now! I'm fully self-sufficient on my SEO/marketing freelancing, it is however well over 10 years since I was involved in building an asset for myself and I want to start building an asset or two for myself rather than helping other people out.

So, I'm trying to work out, in this case what revenue model lends itself to the quickest return based upon my experience and skill set.

I'e, how quick can I get Adsense, Affiliate or whatever revenue, what is the quickest path generally speaking?

I have an idea for a Saas also @CCarter but I would need to hire some developers, it is a strong idea and comes from my frustrations as an SEO.

Or do I try and bring my experience into something a bit better established, I'm late 30's and have been around the block a few times and I have worked in some interesting companies!!!!

I'd say the quick buck is doing what you're doing: Freelance work.

I wouldn't be worried about quick money with a site if you're mainly concerning yourself with SEO. If you're ready to traffic leak and do some serious social media magic you could ramp up real fast with Adsense or Amazon or any thing else. But it won't remotely be passive. It should never be if you intend on keeping growth going. SEO is the closest you'll get to passive but even then you'll need to maintain rankings, and the best way to do that is keep growing.

Typically there's an inverse relationship with fast money and long lasting money. I'd go after the stable money that takes a minute to build up to but is secure. Otherwise you'll end up needing to start over again, and that sucks at our age.

Here's my answer. I'd build an authority site. I'd use Adsense, Amazon, CPM Ads, other affiliate options, Lead Gen, and the works. I'd eventually sell my own products, physical and digital. I'd get traffic through SEO, real marketing on all platforms, and traffic leaks. I'd eventually do PPC and media buying as well.

That's a business with tons of income streams and no single reliance on one method of getting traffic. That's one that will last until you sell it for enough cash for a complete, lasting retirement. Or keep going for fun without the pressure.

And if you want fast money, I'd create the site build and pump out a solid 5-10 review style posts. Then I'd start fleshing out the rest of the site and be interlinking to those while doing homepage link building with profiles and all of that. Then I'd take all links I could to whatever page through marketing and traffic leaks. And I'd strategically build the right links with the right anchors to the review posts so they pop early and start earning. Then it's rinse and repeat the whole process.

All I know is get started! Spend the time it takes to make sure you have a solid plan in terms of vertical and keyword research, then lay a solid foundation. Then it's just "how fast can I scale content production and marketing". The formula is simple. The doing is as well, just takes a lot of effort, time, and money if you want to cut out the effort and time. No better time to plant a seed than today though.

I can smell the fucking laziness.

NOTHING IS QUICK!

If you can't commit to working for at least a full year without earning a single dollar....

You are NOT cut out to be a high performance person nor will you ever make that kind of pay.

The moment you start earning your little breadcrumbs, you'll turn into a fat cat, and you will shit the bed. You'll be in the SAME situation as you are today.

If you want to make money quick go get a damn payday loan.

@contract's going all in...

Thanks for the utterly obvious post, I think you are missing the point!

I'm asking which revenue channel/method is likely to be best for my plan, there is no mention of me not being a hard worker!

If that is your insinuation then I think you are a bit basic in the head, you have no idea what I am capable of or what I am currently achieving. I have no problem hustling, nor hard work!

I just want some guidance on which route might be best as I want to build a little side income from the day job! And you may scoff at $800 but I live in rural Scandinavia and that is my total outgoings!

You have wrong mindset buddy, you want additional $800 per month and keep freelancing, which indicates that you don't want this enough and that's what I think others wanted to suggest in this thread. You either go all in or you don't go at all.

But to give you some ideas, for additional $800 per month your best bet would be affiliate marketing.
- Start affiliate site in low competition niche

- Automate 1 of traffic leaks (for example instagram or twitter botting) cost is not really high if you go with popular social network like instagram or twitter because there are already bots that are made for them.
- Followliker bot - $100 (I use that one, there are other options)
- Proxies - $10 per 10 proxies, per month
- VPS - $10 per month
- Aged PVA Accounts - $1 per account

What site are you using for proxies and where do you buy the accounts? Whats your ban rate?
