Coronavirus Hysteria

Ok, so I've stayed out because I don't feel this is the place to get into "beefs", but I feel like I have a responsibility to those on here, who actually think this is "just flu".

Please listen to the warnings of Europeans.

It's a serious fucking disease that will kill you.

The numbers are pretty definite now. Younger people below 50 are the main groups in intensive care. They just don't die.

However, try to understand what that means. It means, if you catch a bad case, if you're a smoker, if you're overweight, if you're diabetic, if you have high blood pressure. You risk ending up in ICU and you risk dying if you don't get that care.

There are loads of young people on respirators. They survive, the old die, but do you want to spend 7 days in an induced coma while a machine breaths for you? Do you want to gamble that the US has enough respirators? I heard they said in news that you have 1400 in the entire country. That's less than needed for my country of less than 10 million. Without a respirator, the death rate skyrockets. 10% or more.

Do you think the flu is the reason all European countries are now shut down completely. This hasn't happened since WW2. Everything is shut down.

Please do the right thing. Practice social isolation. If you can, go to a cabin, go to the farm. This is serious and it's going to get real bad. I'm just waiting here. We're 2 weeks outside the Italian bloodbath. My only regret is not heading for the hills, now it's too late.

Yeah everything is closed where I live, only grocery stores and pharmacies are open and they limit the amount of people that can go in at a time (i.e. 1 person at a time for smaller stores). I'm in quarantine and sick, but still making good money online and got plenty of food, so I'm happy.

Would be worse if you're quarantined and don't have income or can't take sick days - or if you live in a low income school district, where closing the schools is near impossible as many of the children have no access to computers at home, or parents can't afford care for them.

Very few people in "our" age group (assuming most guys in here are 20-50) end up in ICU though - for the majority there's mild symptoms, but it's very dangerous for certain groups as there's no immunity. It's all just 3% mortality (or whatever it is), until it's your grandmother, wife, or parents that end up in those 3%.

People always seem to underestimate real threats, and overestimate unlikely threats. I.e. people are scared of sharks, but not scared of drowning. People are scared of terrorism or getting pushed in front of a subway car ... Because of a few a terrorist attack involving a few planes almost 20 years ago, you can't bring a large bottle of toothpaste onto a flight ... and then you have a disease with the potential to kill a lot of people, and people are complaining about some restrictions or long immigration lines.

3% is pretty high, and the real rate is probably higher as we don't know what the long-term effects are (i.e. some researchers claim that it can do permanent damage to organs, even after you're recovered). For people over 60 it's probably over 10% mortality, all though I haven't looked that up - so don't quote me.

Also the mortality rate in itself isn't that interesting. I.e. certain types of cancer have very high mortality, but they won't overload the healthcare infrastructure, nor will a seasonal flu.

Like the flu, with this virus you treat the symptoms such as respiratory problems, but unlike the flu there's no herd immunity nor vaccines, so you rely on expensive machinery and enough doctors with training.

It's a different disease than the flu, all though people keep comparing them. I guess the doctors and scientists aren't sure whether you're immune after having the virus, but the H1N1 flu pandemic in 1918 came in many waves until a level of immunity in society was built - and until then it wiped out a lot of people.

Healthcare was worse back then, but if the hospitals can't take in people and offer care, it won't matter how good they are. Even with much less travel and movement of people back then, it spread worldwide in not that long.

funny story.. to ligthen the mode

If I were him, I'd distribute this around to some people in places those laws don't effect. Set up a commission operation and get busy............. .

I'm glad i live in a small , foreign town place. I'll just be happy when all the tourists stop coming.

I hope the best for everyone though. It's def more serious than many think here..... by all accounts of those I know living in areas of danger.

The morning bell hasn't even rang yet. All my stock's average costs have gone down tremendously!

Good luck. :D

Ask any doctor who has actually worked with Corona and SARS (I have several in my family) - and they'll tell you some of the same: wash your hands, don't panic, but the virus is very serious ...

People always have this view of "The big bad {pharma|media|tech|banks|oil|...}". There is no "them" sitting around a table, rubbing their hands, talking about how we're going to shut down the world by scaring people with corona.

Sure, individually, the media, banks, pharma have their own agenda. Media loves to update every time someone dies, or some doctor says something, to sell their CPM ad impression.

People love conspiracies, and where there are none, they make their own. It's always easy to sit and blame the big bad commercial media.

Sorry, but that doctor seems like a poor man's version of a TV doctor. Religious/conservative who mixes politics and medicine and says whatever sounds good, is catchy and gets traction on Twitter. Whether it's true or not, doesn't matter that much.

"Let's pray for our president and his advisers. But know this: Our ultimate security will not be found in tests or treatments anymore than it will be found in our belongings or bank accounts. Our ultimate security rests solely in the hands of a loving God and his saving Son."

... I'd rather read mainstream media than listening to a nutjob like this.

At least the "mainstream media" can cough (lol) up some numbers ... and the numbers are likely wrong, but they are the best estimates we have.

Edit: On a happier note: I'm buying real estate as soon as we see the price drop, it will take a while due to elasticity, but as soon as people lose their jobs or can't afford their too expensive mortgages, I will dump some cash into the market.

Interest rates will drop to 0 and EURIBOR to even more negative.

All our ads are smashing it now. People are at home and bored.

That's anything though. Any virus can be "serious." THE FLU is serious too and a KILLER! The flu kills a shit ton. The problem is the way the media and government treating it for whatever agenda but you don't see them going THIS crazy about it(before they did go crazy about it but not to this extent of shutdowns) with harmful diseases even worse than corona. Just in 3 months from december, 39 deaths from influenza A.

Sars is nowhere near the top

I had that shit last year I could have probably died and was close to it with the high fever etc.

Anyone read anything scientifically sound about endgame here? Light at the end of the tunnel kind of stuff?

We know about how contagious it is, we know about mortality rates, we know our systems will be overwhelmed, we know we don't have enough ventilators, now shutting down restaurants, bars, etc.

Eventually all states will roll out similar quarantine policies. Spread will flat-line like we saw in China. Then what?

Vaccines, which are currently non-existent, if every stage of development goes well, won't become available until fall at the earliest.

Only shed of hope I've heard so far come from Chinese colleagues, who went back to work last week, and didn't seem concerned, and they work in Shanghai.

Let's not dwell on what we know. The media can take care of the depression for us. Let's share anything optimistic we can get our hands on so we can get through this together, bravely.

Yeah, it's not a competition of what's more deadly. Both are potentially life-threatening. They are very different viruses. Covid-19 is a corona virus like SARS and MERS and not an influenza strain.

With the H1N1 pandemic in 2009, we were dealing with influenza - and were more prepared.

Here are some differences though, for perspective:

- Covid-19 requires hospitalization in more cases - taking a bigger toll on health infrastructure. This is not the case with influenza. If you need intubation to survive, you're not going to magically get better without medical attention.

- Doctors and medical staff know less about it, so it's hard to treat it consistently

- No immunity in the population, and no vaccines yet. It has also been reported that people can get infected again after being cleared of the virus. With H1N1 you could get a flu shot (I had to take one as I was working as a teacher for children).

- Higher mortality rate (~0.1% for seasonal flu, vs ~3.5% so far from Covid-19), it may be higher or lower, but nobody really knows. There's also a lag and an incubation period. I.e. in Sweden you saw hundreds of infected with no deaths, and then suddenly people start dying and the mortality rate gravitates toward the average over time (let's say 2-3% with a functioning hospital infrastructure).

- A high amount of severe cases happen for people below 50 years old - unlike seasonal flu.

- More contagious. Typically with seasonal flu each infected person infects 1.3 other people, with Covid-19 it's estimated that each infected person will infect two to three others. In most countries that haven't contained it yet, you see a doubling of infected cases every 3-4 days.

None of the above is media propaganda - it's just the facts as we know them so far, with some uncertainty due to inconsistent reporting (both on deaths and infected cases) - but it's from reliable sources, and not an opinion of someone on Twitter.

You can interpret it however you want, but when people are saying "it doesn't kill anyone", it just shows stupidity, ignorance or all of the above.

No one is refuting that viruses can kill, didn't even say that, where did you draw that conclusion? Not even the tweet said that. Ya let's not listen to majority of doctors and count on "reliable sources" like what CNN and their green screen or msnbc, fox, cspan, alex jones, no propaganda, no conspiracies exist, *coughs corona beer* Richard Nixon. Good day!

I'm probably an idiot, but I'm not too worried about this.
If it goes pandemic, we're all getting it.

It's a serious fucking disease that will kill you.

My only regret is not heading for the hills, now it's too late.
Clicking last page from front page.

That was sobering.

"Let's pray for our president and his advisers. But know this: Our ultimate security will not be found in tests or treatments anymore than it will be found in our belongings or bank accounts. Our ultimate security rests solely in the hands of a loving God and his saving Son."

Or how about this gold nugget:
Be assured: God is sovereign. He is sovereign over the heavens and the earth; over expansive galaxies and minuscule microbes. He is sovereign over this #CoronaVirus. And He is sovereign over you and me.
Yeah, would probably be careful in putting too much trust into an MD that puts this much faith into Jebus.

It's funny how there are not many cases in Russia. What did they do differently? They reacted on time. They closed their borders as soon as they heard how the corona is spreading.

Next 2-3 weeks are going to be crucial.

People are panicking, they are focusing too much on this stuff. This is a very big opportunity to make money.

And as far as personal safety goes:

1. Wash your hands.
2. Avoid big events.
3. Take Vitamin D and C.
4. Buy ammo.

If this virus puts on end to the open borders nonsense, it will be one hell of a silver lining.

I'm not going to divulge how or why I know, but a lot of this is a sham.

Is there a virus getting people sick? Yes.

Is it as bad as the media is pushing it? No.

I have NEVER been one to take someone else's advice for anything. Sure I might listen to it and ponder over it, but unless I act on it and find the same thing on my own trials, I don't buy into it.

I've been doing some research of my own ( ahem my wife that is ), reaching out and talking to people and doing surveys, etc.

A lot of people have been talked to and surveyed here on my end.

People in other countries, workers at different levels at hospitals, business owners, stay at home moms, etc everyone and anyone basically.

One question we asked people was, "Do you personally know anyone inflicted with the coronavirus"? Out of hundreds and hundreds of NO's, we got 5 that said YES.

Out of those 5 Yes, I have to assume at least half are false. No one would lie about a NO, but we all know toppers and people who want to feel special or buck the system. We also know people that don't fully understand the question and would answer YES even though its a real NO. So at best I have to validate that really those 5 are 2 or 3.

With that, we also asked where those people are from. From the YES crowd it was mostly all countries outside of the US, except 1 person in Los Angeles.

Out of all of those people, no one except 1 person ( for US stats ) knows anyone inflicted with it.

And guess what, that would be correct.

Why?

We don't even have test kits. How can you test for something that no one has a kit for?

We had kits, but a ton of them got damaged. So what is left is hospitals taking samples and sending off to a lab at the moment. A lab that could be controlled by whom with any agenda sending back results as they see fit.

In talking to workers at several hospitals ( Tampa and other populous cities ), I found out none of them have test kits at hospitals. Of the 6 cases in 1 Tampa hospital, the 6 that are sick are "presumed" sick with coronavirus. Presumed. They haven't been tested.

Do your own research folks.

You can find the facts to life and how things are all day long, but your life is controlled by the millions of sheep masses out there who constraint your life.

I'm still going out daily to shop, eat, bank, get gas, and do all kinds of shit. I know the truth to most of this.

However, I'm having to still live with idiots and now I can't wipe my ass or dine in at my favorite Burger King anymore because everyone else went loony ass.

Social distancing? This shit isn't anything new folks. As an introvert I have been doing this every day of my life.

However, this is all a sham as far as the media and hysteria is concerned.

Is there a virus? Yes.

Is this a real concern... Not unless your 80 and sick already. Same concern we had with SARs and Swine Flu ( which my family had ) and every other flu season we had in the last 100+ years.

rant over. Get the facts and do your own real research.

@eliquid

I actually do know a few (one of them is my mom, and another my stepdad) who got the virus.
It hit her pretty hard, but she is over it.

He did not show any symptoms.
He probably carried it around everywhere.

Location in the world and were they both actually tested for AND verified as Covid-19? I don't mean to question it, but I have to make sure I at least ask for record keeping.

I was sick a while ago for a full week but it was Flu-A and it hit me pretty hard as well.

You’re hilarious. But meanwhile, I actually see people doing so on Reddit. People are making a serious killing when they are screening correctly.

Everyone is an expert on these things, same as vaccines (people who think they can treat measles with cucumber water and lemon juice), global warming, politics, etc. It's like that one uncle who talks about stock trading at Christmas.

People with no formal training in medicine have no basis to spread their own research on complicated viral diseases that not even doctors understand. I don't know shit about medicine, but I listen to people that do - but I can speak for numbers in general as I know statistics.

I know several doctors who are currently treating patient with Covid19 - all the doctors I know have dealt with cases.

We have test kits here, and stats here show only people who have confirmed infection, not people who have a cold and think "maybe it could be corona because I saw it on TV". The numbers of infected people are far higher, because only confirmed cases are actually listed as infected - something the data aggregators are open about. When there are 30 000 cases in italy, it is 30 000 cases confirmed, and not 1000 cases of Covid19, and 29 000 cases on manflu.

Similarly mortality rates are higher than many countries show now, because the true death rate is amount of recovered patients vs deaths, not infected vs. dead which operate at two different timelines (people don't die instantly). With a doubling of infections every 2-4 days depending on containment, the dead we see now are the infections from days/weeks ago, so there's a substantial lag.

It's like when you pay upfront for leads, and convert them later. You get leads (infections) and they gradually convert to buyers or non-converters (dead/recovered) ... since we're a marketing forum.

It's also not a flu virus, so it's not similar to H1N1 or a regular seasonal flu that most have immunity for. It's a different virus.

It's more similar to SARS, which had a mortality rate of ~10% but was less contagious. Also there a disproportionate amount of the people who were infected were healthcare workers, because initially it was treated way to lax in terms of protective gear.

yeah, kinda like how Dr. Leon Eisenberg, the ‘father’ of ADHD, said just before his death that ADHD ‘is a prime example of a fictitious disease.’

Or how cigarettes are safe for you ( 50's and 60's ) and were endorsed by doctors.

Or how when I was growing up, eggs were good for you.. then they were bad for you.. now they are good for you again.

Or how things like Asbestos were safe products or lead paint.. but we see how that went.

I'm just getting started.

Just a few moments ago I listened to the US government tell us the delay on test kits was because we are developing better ones. So there isn't test kits to go around to test people or there would be no delay right?

The reason we need better ones? The ones used in other countries are bringing up false positives. So no one even knows if these numbers are right.

Either the numbers we have are false and a lie, or the government is telling a lie? Either way, the only truth is doing your OWN research, not listening to "presumed authority".

If you blindly trust authority figures, you are already too deep in the dis-belief of this world and it's flock of sheep.

.

The test kits are pretty accurate, but I'm sure there are false positive and positive negatives. However the US is poorly prepared overall.

Well, everyone thought cigarettes were not harmful. Everyone thought asbestos was a great cheap material; it's been used for thousands of years. Neither were a lie that doctors invented. I'm not saying to trust every doctor - but I'd trust a doctor more than a random person who have done their own research online.

Same with lead, mercury, and probably in some years micro plastic, sedentary work and screen time will have more research, and we will all realize how stupid we were.

Most doctors, and not the doctor Jesus from Twitter above, are held to a higher standard and generally do their job at a great sacrifice and not for for fronting some conspiracy or for making money. Every doctor isn't a part of some presumed authority that are all keeping this huge lie while pretending to be sincere and lying to thousands of patients over their life. Sure, some do ... but not enough to keep such a huge conspiracy.

But I find it a bit amusing that people do their own research on Reddit and Twitter and are suddenly experts on medicine and virology. It takes 7 years of school to become a medical doctor - then more if you want to specialize ... so a week on twitter and reddit and some clickbaity Facebook posts that "have some interesting points" doesn't make a person an expert. It's usually the same people who find their own facts about immigration and vaccines, and the fact that people can spread all this junk and people actually believe it is very fascinating.

It's scary really. How can people believe that numerous independent countries, across the political spectrum, would choose to cause huge economic harm to themselves for no reason?
