So, in case you all missed the news,

Google News stories will now be even more visible in search. Where 'Top Stories' was featured, now there are even more pictures to steal the attention away from those scrolling down towards search results.

Where is this Google News change going?

In my opinion, the way times are.. People are learning more and more the importance of living for today vs yesterday. There's a true power in those who understand this concept and I think it's part of our natural evolution for this to happen due to technology. Lack of attention. etc.

Google said:
Now, we’re using the latest in machine learning to bring this approach to top stories in Google Search, making it easier for people to dive into the most useful, timely articles available.
Before you saw just a photo and a bunch of headlines. Now, you will see a carousel of news allowing scrolling left to right. Basically the attention of people can be snatched before they even go down to search results .

To power this new experience, we developed a new story-understanding technology to map the people, places and things involved in a news story, and then draw connections between them. This technology allows us to create distinct groups of news articles. To generate these groups, we use a variety of machine learning techniques including BERT models to examine the related articles and determine where one story ends and another begins. Our research has shown that clustering results into clearly-defined stories is critical in helping people easily navigate the results and identify the best content for their needs.

Another interesting take from this: Google News Network Not Only Sites to Be Published

Google News may no longer need to be applied for shortly . The new technology is supposed to be able to recognize quality news sites, their relevant headlines of the day, and automatically put them into search's "Top stories."

Personally, I do NOT buy this part. I've seen some shifts in results but nothing indicates this is sucessful yet.

I also noticed that site's news articles are now being published to the 'google news section' of search in order of their 'power' .. different than before. The ranking was a bit all over the place. There was a big shift in this, within the last 7 days I estimate.

I never use Google on mobile, but I've just opened my phone to try it.

I searched "keyword tool" and found:
  1. What I assume is a single Adwords slot, but it's unmarked, which I'm sure the FTC is thrilled about.
  2. A featured snipped from Wikipedia defining what a keyword tool is with an image carousel
  3. "Videos from the web" carousel
  4. "People also search for" carousel and listing of questions you can expand
  5. 9 organic results
  6. Another giant list of "related searches"
I had to scroll for four full screen widths before I ever saw an organic result.

The reason I did this was because the .gif in the OP didn't show any ads so I was curious if they were willing to push those down in order to cram new features at the top. I'm not even sure #1 was an ad, but it has to be. There's no way they're giving an organic slot the top spot and having zero ads.

I'd love to see a breakdown of their Adwords revenue on desktop versus mobile at this point.

All of this begs the question... When are we going to see these "enhanced SERPs" on desktop with horizontal scrolling features?

I discovered something recently... let me find it and put it in here:

Always changing. Google toyed with a news style box for any site if it was a relevant search for that site i.e. Builder Society Buy Sell Thread Updates... It obviously didn't stick after their trial but I would love to figure out a way to get carousel access since I've gotten into Google news.

update of mine:

I've found Google now to be more effective in selling product
BUT these post may need to be more frequent now to maintain an easily viewed placement
It seems news is being cycled out of front page feature slots faster now
Pages still get ranked fastest however

Update:
The Google News is still being tampered with heavily.

What I've seen:
1) High DA/PA google news sites right now are SUPER EFFECTIVE.
2) Putting your brand in a cluster of news stories is still a big boost for serps temporarily. After the news goes flat ( ~3 months), your site will shuffle if it's not still frequently mentinoed within a popular topic.

3) Something big is on the way however. Google's very focused on improving news quality and the sites that make it through the fire will likely be more impacting on search results than ever. Why? Google's secretly talking with diff news outlet about paying them to create content they feature. This content will likely only be from people/groups who are respectable journalist who don't compromise the facts ( but lets be honest.. if they have to pay $$$ for this, somebody else will pay for the contrary. It's all for sale) .

news story: TheVerge.com report

4) Another big issue mentioned here. Googles tryilng to avoid Europe's law that's requiring tech companies to pay news companies for previewing clips of their articles.

I see this too, but with other types of "going viral," like getting a ton of Facebook shares, Twitter shares, or upvotes on Reddit. Google seems to know how to push anything that's "relevant in the moment" to the top and then let it drop back down over time. I see this on posts that don't have freshness involved, like a news article would.

What's nice is even though the post sinks back down in the SERPs it never falls all the way. There ends up being a new bottom that's higher up.
