There was a dog we loved in my neighborhood. It was so sweet, an older dog that would run around with the younger ones. One of the kid's had said the dog's name was Sugar, and we called it that for years. Sugar's here! Yay, Sugar! We love you, Sugar!
But all of us started having shoes go missing from our garages and whatnot. We'd end up with only one shoe of a pair and it started getting ridiculous. We kept blaming it on this dog we called Bubba, because he would always sniff around the garages while we played basketball.
Finally though, one day one of us went over to Sugar's actual house for some random reason and saw TONS of shoes in the owner's garage, nicely arranged. So we knocked and explained they were our shoes and we'd be taking them back. So not only did it turn out that it was Sugar the whole time, but we learned after years of calling the dog Sugar that it's name was actually Sasha.
True story.
