Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) Project

Saw this in webmaster tools a while back, but finally looked into it today:

An interesting note from Webmaster Tools:
If your AMP-compliant pages include a few additional pieces of information, they can also benefit from special display features in Google Search results.

I am not clear on a couple things:
Is this replacing your normal HTML display?
Are you creating AMP pages in addition to your existing pages?

From what I understand yes. And then we should use rel canonical to point at regular pages. No, it's not replacing regular HTML. It will special version for served from Google's cache (and others).
