301'ing an aged domain to a fresh domain

I remember reading a while ago that this helped fresh websites rank a lot faster and I wanted to know if it still works / if its a good idea. I remember reading that any domain that hadn't been dropped could be 301'd to a fresh domain and its age was, at least partially, credited to the new domain. Its pretty easy to find a domain in Godaddy auctions with a similar keyword that can be bought for $20 and forwarded. Good idea? Bad idea?
 
I remember reading that a 301 would boost rankings then drop and that building a PBN was usually better long term.

But again I could be wrong and hopefully someone can correct me because I'm interested in this too
 
Buy a domain that has TRAFFIC not rankings.

How can a domain have rankings if it's in Godaddy Auction?

When was the last time you clicked on a Google result and it went to a website that was expired and now is a Godaddy Auction?

There is a reason those "$20" domains are going for "$20" and the domains with traffic are going for $$$ to $$$$$.

I totally understand what you're saying, I've already read both of those, and I've been actively looking for those types of domains. I'm not looking to get a big search engine boost from buying a $20 domain -- I just know that there is supposedly a '1 year age hump' that once a site has 'passed' it becomes easier to rank. And I remember hearing that 301'ing can pass one age. My primary focus isn't SEO, I'm just trying to take advantage of any easy wins along the way.
 
If I was going to do this, I wouldn't go purchase one of the $15 + Registration Fee domains, even if they are 15 years old.

I'd rather have a domain that's 2-5 years old that at least has some solid links, killing two birds with one stone. This may require waiting several months until the right one pops up though.

Tons of bonus points for traffic if possible. It's easier to buy a domain with traffic and build a site around it than find one that has traffic related to your pre-existing site.

This is such a good point, and something that I've learned myself over the past week.
 
I always buy sites that are extremely niche related, right down to anchors instead of buying one that is in general niche related. I've had mixed experiences with 301s in general in terms of ranking increases.
 
Google has been dinking sites that get too creative with 301's so I'd be careful.
