I actually started playing with grav a while ago, but found it a little more complicated than jekyll in terms of making an actual custom design website. But plugins that they offer is great, and perhaps wouldn't even be that bad for a flip, since you can make new posts just like in WordPress.

But yes, selling a site running on jekyll doesn't seem like a good idea after all. WordPress it is.

Don't pick whatever you are interested in, it will go nowhere. Learn how to do a proper keyword research, get some tools that will help you and find the keywords that generate revenue and bring in traffic. Optimise, traffic leak, become a big brand. Get to a $x/month goal and flip.

Bloom by Elegant themes. Its a new one, but very functional. Just started using it recently and there are no issues so far. Easy to customize and you can place options pretty much wherever you want on your site.

I am too at a university, and I'm with Bluehost. I know they aren't the best, but I have never had any issues with them. I keep seeing this ads on Flippa for hosting at Hostgator for 1 cent. Maybe give them a try.
