Google Algorithm Updates - 2021 Ongoing Discussion

I hope it isn't CWV, but it could be.

Do you have a link to any credible SEO's who say this?
Its being talked about all over (SEJ, PubGalaxy, Google themselves) but looks like @Bladhark is right that it's implementation starts in mid-june and wont be completed until end of august. I mistakenly thought it was starting roll out on June 1.

But yea, Core Web Vitals (page experience) is going to be a part of the ranking algo - specifically Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) and First Input Delay (FID)

I agree this is big. One of my sites lost about 25% and another gained about 33%, so it's all equal but it does hurt my feelings that one dropped. The way I see it is there will be an adjustment as usual around another week and a half from now that will reverse some of this, and then there will be "part 2" in July that will either double down on the good and bad, or do some more reversal. I just wanted to chime in and say "yeah, it's big, and it's still on-going".

Diversification!

One one year old site down 14%.

One 11 year old site PUMPING... +24% on decent volume.

Seems like everyone has the same experience, some big down, some big up.

I see it even on the page level. Big winners and big losers.

Which leads me to believe this could have more to do with the very basic stuff in the algo and not the more machine learning stuff and not the EAT/authority stuff.

This last week I'm seeing a pattern of:

Declining rankings -> Huge jumps to best of all time positions -> declining rankings -> huge jumps up

Weird stuff.

Potential Local Update: June 8th, 2021

It's not certain if this is an independent local SEO update or if it's a part of the core update that's undoubtedly still rolling out, but BrightLocal is showing that there were some pre-tremors on the 6th, then touchdown on the 8th, and then settling on the 9th:

They also break it down by industry in terms of who was impacted the most:

What's interesting is the "All Industry Average" at 4.1, while these others got really shook up in a drastic way.

Confirmed Update: June 15th, 2021
Core Web Vitals

Today it was not only confirmed that the June 2021 Core Update has finished rolling out but that the "Page Experience Update" has begun, which is for the Core Web Vitals:

Rgw6WNl.png

The impact will start tiny and remain "tiny" as it continues to roll out and finish by the end of August 2021. Gives plenty of time for them to tweak and make adjustments as they slowly increase how much weight these factors have in the algorithm.

What percent of sites will actually get to green for these though? Current analysis don't look too promising https://www.searchenginejournal.com/searchmetrics-analyzing-core-web-vitals-performance/403113/

I thought average load times were already abysmal. Now small businesses and mom and pops are expected to conquer LCP, FID, and CLS? lol yeah right!

Furthermore, my core web vitals report in GSC is only including a small fraction of my site, which seems par for the course with GSC being janky AF.

Just struggling to see web admins at large even knowing about this, let alone caring about it, let alone having the skills to comply.

Unless by making it a signal they mean, they really only intend to demote sites with absolutely atrocious CWVs.. knowing full well the number of sites with "good" CWV will never exceed something embarrassingly small like 10%. ...in which case being an average sheep in the flock of average dumb sheep might not be such a bad thing.

-20% on a newish site and up 30% on an established site.

The newish site has no ads on it and loads very fast.

The established site has heavy ad placements and is relatively slow to load as it is image and video heavy.

Looking for patterns in this is often meaningless unless it is an obvious penalty that nukes the site.

Just keep pushing with content and promotion and stick to the plan.

I will exit the established site in May 2023 and the new site in April 2027.

Maybe my nerves are numbed from getting reamed in crypto but G updates are just a bump in the road these days so long as the overall trajectory is up.

That's a longer than average confidence in future returns I would say.
Big growth potential for both. That being said if I destroy mid term and long term revenue targets earlier then I will cash out sooner.

The market for sites is on fire at the minute and I expect it will be until there is a correction.

Yeah, that's cool, I am always worried, because I've been destroyed by Penguin and Panda years ago and will never forget that.

I haven't experience anything like that in the last 3 years I've been at it. I lost maybe 20-30% on the 2019 December update, but it wasn't a catastrophic set back. I did sell the site in 2020 and as far as I can tell, the new owners have not been able to gain anything back despite link building heavily. Which bothers me a little bit in terms of the strategy of the sites I build.

If the core web vitals report in search console looks good, I'm assuming we don't need to worry about this one? Or is there more to watch out for here

It's funny the sites I work on daily are holding/down thanks to these latest updates while the sites I don't care about and don't work on are up.

Am I being schizo or is this just yet another one of those must have data from the really long time series comparative tests we just ran or fuck you type updates....

This is a weird update.

I've seen changes will Google News search as well this time.
They've got a lot of 'bugs' to sort out.
Sites are duplicating content and getting better placement than the original. I expect things to get rolled back on this one.
I'veonly seen it with 2 or 3 sites.. But still, def can imagine the problem being much bigger.

Exactly the case at mine's

Noticing this too, sites that I don't touch with links and left alone for half a year have been jumping up. Sites I have been actively link building to dropped. (this includes my whitehat and blackhat sites). Really worrying me in terms of the future. I am going to keep building links but I wonder if they're tweaking the dials and reducing the value of links more and more and upping the effect of user metrics and signals.

One big thing I did see on the sites I exclusively use pbns for they all saw the same pattern of the screenshot below. In December they were hit. In March they Recovered and start of June they were reversed again. This is the same as what I saw in some of Charles floates videos where he mentions reversals. To me this update particularly on my blackhat sites was...

Dec - Hit
March - Reversal
Jun - Return to dec stats again

Traffic seems to be up about 30-50% for me today, so far. Semrush Sensor is showing some volatility. Is this still the June core update or something else?

It's Amazon Prime Day today and tomorrow, so every online retailer is running big sales.

Is the page experience a per page signal or site wide?
