Besides the direct traffic, is it correct to assume that the link turns from nofollow to dofollow, when the post gains a certain number of upvotes?

Looks like you're right and I am very wrong.

For some reason people were memeing 10 a lot in the past and I never bothered to check.

I have never bothered to find out what the reason is though. I suspect its either on a sub by sub basis or account age.

All of the gurus say these links don't count for anything but I have ranked sites on Reddit, wiki and forum links alone. May as well grab a few!

Absolutely true.

I have trained people to run accounts just for this.

If you get to front page of certain subreddits, you immediately go to front page of search.

Reddit is as good a ranking factor as you'd get from "social media", so I can understand why Google would use it. Reddit has some pretty sophisticated anti-spam features, so any post that gets a lot of upvotes is usually going to be legit.

Yes though like Quora if you have a network of users it's easy to "launch" a post.

There seems to be some sort of "organic upvote" effect that takes place on both platforms after they get that initial traction.

Sure, but in my experience, Redditors are quite savvy at spotting spam, so there's some organic pushback against it. Though there's A LOT of manipulation going on in political discussions, but that is big scale operations I'm guessing.
