Speaking with the owner and they have a figure in mind.

Interested to hear what people think here...

If it's brandable and niche related, would give $600-700.

Even with all those badass links?

Yes very brandable.

It depends what you want to do with it. If I was putting it into a pbn I would look to get it for around what @Tove said. If I wanted it to build a brand around it then I would be willing to pay more. Maybe even a little too much to secure the .com for my brand.

I would mainly price it based on how much value you can extract from it:
- If for PBN. Meaning you are not planning to create a real site out of it, then not that much.
- If the site name ( and maybe previous history ) fits your future project and you can use it as a base, then I guess it can go in 4 figure range. Depending on the value of niche, competition and brandability ofc.
- If you have existing project in that niche and you want to use this domain for redirect or just a sister-site then I would pay value based on how hard it is to get links in that niche, how well is general link building working for you so far, relevancy to your main site ( if both content based then its perfect, for example ), how much you can spend ( generally I prefer links over buying relevant websites when I'm on tight budget ).
- Then there is always the option of buying a website and re-establishing its rankings and start generating revenue from it. If you see its possible and are willing to put money into, then it will increase the value you can get from that website.

EDIT: Of course none of that means much when people are attached to their websites. I have had people quote me 10k for much worse sites that do not generate any revenue and that were abandoned three years ago from owners.

time for the big reveal...

He wanted $150k for it

That's pretty absurd unless it's getting into the "domainer valuation" world of the brand name itself.

But I've paid around $6k for domains like that with similar backlink profiles with less than stellar names.

Must of been a brandable/premium domain for that price, if that's the case the links are a (big) bonus. Are you still buying it?

No he was waaaaaaaaaaaaay over valuing it.

It was a blogger who managed to get worldwide attention for a particular topic, hence the backlinks.

It could have been turned into something big brand style but the pricing made it unrealistic.

An opportunist! Good for him, but for every blogger that realizes what they have, there's thousands of others who don't. I bet you can find a deal that good for 1/20th of the cost, at the cost of hunting and offering and losing time.
