Wordpress: External links open in new tab

Hey need some advice.

Website with around 200k words, 50 posts, 500? outbound links...

Need a quick way to make all of the outbound links open in a new tab, without having an impact on internal links to other pages on the site (These should open in the same tab). If it makes things easier, interlinks haven't been added yet.

I need all of these OBL's opening in new tabs, if there's a plugin I'd like to ensure that the links will remain even after the plugin is removed (Not going to permanently add a plugin for this.)

Ideally looking for a way to do this without having to edit each link by hand, any ideas?

I would add some javascript to your site which finds all of the links, checks if the host matches and sets the target property of the link so it opens in a new tab.
