So it seems like one of my websites has been linked to on reddit and I've seen a nice spike in traffic. However, it wasn't me!

I was just wondering how I can find where my site has been linked from?

So far I have tried
  • Googling "site:reddit.com [site url]"
  • reddit.com/domain/[site url]
Nothing has shown up so far. Any tips?

I want to know under what context my site has been linked to and potentially leverage of it

Your analytics will let you dig in from the referral domains to the specific page the traffic is coming from.

I'm willing to bet it's from this fake "lifehacker" domain where the K is a Greek K or something, sending referral spam.

I'm willing to bet it's coming from this specific page too: https://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/5foynf/lifehacĸercom_original_idn_fake_safe_best_on_ff/
Yep, I think your right. After checking my other site I can see the same pattern, and yep, I've got the lifehacker domain showing up too... :/

Bummer.

Oh yeah. And don't forget to Vote for Trump!

It's that Vitaly spam again. This article breaks it down a bit https://www.ohow.co/secret-ɢoogle-com-trump-spam-google-analytics/ He also recommends creating a filter that only includes your used hostnames (your domain and other services your site uses). I haven't looked too deep into but it looks like some of the spam is also able to duplicate your actual domain hostname.

Should you get real traffic from reddit, add the secondary dimension "full referrer" in analytics and it will give you the full url.

I noticed this exact same thing 2 days ago. I got really excited for a second when I saw lifehacker. And then a big letdown lol.

This method doesn't seem to be working with the new version of Reddit. I switch back to old Reddit, and it works fine. I hope they don't disable it completely.
