Snapchat's paid discovery can get you infront of dozens of millions of people that have short attention spans and not a lot of disposable income, something Starbucks couldn't pass up.

Or double down with a spend of 200k and link to your products from Instagram.

Do you think more intrusive ads on Instagram and seeing more brands on Snapchat are going to hurt them in the long run? Will that turn off their audiences? I wonder if there's a better way for these massive apps to monetize (Which often seems like an afterthought)?

I'd pay a few bucks to remove ads from an app that I use everyday, and I imagine that the people that are willing to pay to remove ads aren't the people that those ads are meant for anyways...
 
I don't think traditional display ads is the way for mobile, there is something that's "still to come" that will solve this problem, but traditional ads, I don't see it working. Maybe in-contextual link ads would work.
