Wish people did not use Alexa, it is as said above a vanity metric and means nothing to anyone in the know, I guess if you are in a sales environment it can be useful.

If you have a good link profile you can expect to get away with it if you are careful but I don't think it is a sound system for doing at any real scale. I would consider pointing the redirects to pages that link to your site to give them a boost though.

+1 for Term Explorer, but as others have said the accuracy of Google Keyword Tool is based off PPC traffic, this works ok for large markets like the UK and US but the data is really unreliable in emerging markets with low internet penetration
