I'm not sure if this is kosher... but I would love to see a bunch of well performing authority sites to study and learn from, to get a better idea of what it is I want to build. I know... websites are everywhere and I find myself looking at everything through a new lens lately, but I'm having a hard time determining what makes a CPA or affiliate type site "good."

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

thewirecutter.com
androidauthority.com
Flippa.com - here's an infinite supply

Try flippa, there are lots of high quality sites there as examples. Many have stats and details on the sales posts as well.

healthambition.com

This is a website that's run by the guys who own authorityhacker.com (which is a great site for learning about this stuff).

What you can also do is just use Google. Google keywords with "high buying intent" as these are the ones which authority sites will mostly target with their content.

So maybe search for "best sea kayak", and browse the results until you see some authority/affiliate sites. Best cordless drill, best road bike, best golf driver for women.. you get the idea, there's endless options.

Just keep searching and browsing, and you'll find plenty of examples of what you're looking for.

I talked to the guys behind authorityhacker a while ago.

Their best advice was to have each article with a clear message, an easy to understand
"this is what you have to do".

abduzeedo.com
tutsplus.com
smashingmagazine.com

These ones meet your requirements of being everywhere and having a great DA, but I absolutely hate the fact that they pop in every search I make with generic guest posts that are nothing but reworded tactics that I've seen 18 times already:

hubspot.com
crazyegg.com (their product is awesome though)

Every few months, I find myself back at css-tricks because I'm trying to centre something vertically and horizontally.

Hahaha you're my best friend now, same exact thing happens to me once a month.

Here you go

Micro Niche site like @CCarter said first target 100 keywords with 30k-50k words deep review content.

vacuumjudge.com
apennyshaved.com

After success from this Mini site next turn your site into AUTHORITY SITE with 400 Posts like below..

ConsumerSearch.com
Engadget.com
CNet.com

Sub-Niche -> Niche -> Vertical = Authority (Brand)

Checkout toptenreviews.com and good housekeeping. They are both good examples of what affiliate sites should look.
